Edgar Sibley Gaddis

A memorial service honoring the life of Edgar Sibley Gaddis will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 3200 Airline Drive, Bossier City, Louisiana.  A reception at the church will immediately follow the service.

Edgar was born on September 15, 1928, and died on September 4, 2023. He was born near Springridge, Sabine Parish, the last of seven children of Sidney and Effie Gaddis, two schoolteachers.

Edgar is survived by Joy Stothart Gaddis, his wife of more than 74 years. He is also survived by two daughters, Ellen Howell and Blanche Hirsch, and a son, Dr. Thomas Gaddis. His oldest son, Dr. Robert Gaddis, preceded him in death. Edgar deeply loved his grandchildren:  Amanda, Abby, Mary Ellen, Sarah (deceased), Jane, Stewart, Olivia, Danielle and Patrick. Many great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, in-laws, nieces, and nephews loved and survive him as well.

Edgar lived a long and active life. He graduated from Northwestern in Natchitoches (courtesy of a basketball scholarship), and there, he met his wife, Joy.  They eventually settled in Coushatta, LA where he spent the majority of his life. During those 60-plus years, Edgar stayed busy as a basketball coach, teacher, business owner, Sunday school teacher, football game announcer, and public servant. His commitment to bettering himself and his community continued on after he retired from real estate in his late 80’s and made the move to Bossier City. As a resident of Brookdale Assisted Living, he spent his final years serving his new community as a resident liaison, Bible study leader, a substitute exercise class teacher on the weekends, and captain of the cornhole team. With all of these many accomplishments and contributions to be proud of, his family is most grateful for the example he set as a man who wanted to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.
