On March 6, 2022, Dr. Mitchell Bart Basel passed away peacefully at Willis-Knighton Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana with his two kids, Jacob and Shelby, by his side. He was born on January 23, 1957, in Hampstead, NY to Theodore and Sylvia Basel. Dr. Basel was a well accomplished Gastroenterologist, spending the last years of his career at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA before retiring in 2020.
Dr. Basel received his medical degree at Albany Medical College in Albany, NY and completed his residency through Brown University at Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI. He chose the specialty of gastroenterology following the untimely death of his mother, who passed away from colon cancer.
Colleagues of Dr. Basel spoke of his exemplary skill at his craft, patience in the surgery room, and wisdom of council. Patients of Dr. Basel spoke of his strong expertise in medicine, natural ability to make them feel comfortable, and great sense of humor. Friends of Dr. Basel spoke of his ability to light up a room, his gift for easy conversation, and overall enjoyment to be around. Family spoke of him as, while sometimes illusive, intelligent, generous, loving, and a gentle soul.
Dr. Basel had a strong love for music, traveling all over the country for concerts, collecting records and CDs and most recently taking up the guitar. He loved spending time jamming out with friends playing blues music. Some other passions of Dr. Basel included hiking the national parks, skiing, road trips, climbing, fishing, cruising the lake on his boat, cooking, and hosting parties. Dr. Basel also adored spending time with his two dogs, Buddy, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, and Max, a golden retriever.
Dr. Basel is survived by his two children, Jacob and Shelby; his siblings, Sarna, Scott, and Peri; and his nieces and nephews, Rachel, Rebecca, Adam, Marlon, Scarlett, Jesse, Sydney, and Jamie.
Dr. Basel will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his many adventures, accomplishments, and caring moments throughout life.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to their favorite charity in Dr. Basel’s name.
