Dorothy Mae Scruggs

Dorothy "Janie" Mae Jones Scruggs, surrounded by loving family and friends, left this world to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 6, 2021. Janie was born in Leesville, LA on October 24, 1942 to Dorothy and Kenneth Jones. She was an only child and the apple of their eye. Janie grew up loving all things nature; a trait that would follow her throughout her entire life. Whether it was riding her horse, Fred, spending time at the farm with her grandparents, or just sitting quietly reading, she was always happiest with the warm sun on her shoulders and a cool breeze in her hair. After being a proud Wampus Cat at Leesville High School, she attended Northwestern State University, where she would graduate with a degree in Elementary Education. While there, Janie became a part of the Wesley Foundation, where she would strengthen her faith, make many life-long friends, and meet the love of her life, Jim Scruggs. After graduating with teaching degrees, Janie and Jim were married in May of '64 and soon moved to Shreveport. Janie worked as an elementary school teacher in the Louisiana School System for over 30 years, in both public and private schools. In 1984 she found her true teaching "home" at Herndon Magnet School. In the 23 years that Janie was at Herndon, the faculty, staff and students all became family. "Mrs. Scruggs" was known for her bouncy ponytail, beautiful smile, contagious laugh, love of animals and teddy bears, big hugs and of course her gummy bears! Mrs. Scruggs was the kind of teacher that encouraged her students to be themselves and was labeled "favorite teacher" by many of them. Janie was also a long-time, active member at Broadmoor United Methodist Church. She and Jimmy taught youth Sunday School, chaperoned youth trips, choir tours and handbell festivals. "Mama Scruggs" was always ready with a hug, an encouraging word, or even a stern talking to, if needed. Janie was a "Mama" to so many, but her two children, Jennifer and Ken were the center of her world. Janie was one of the most loving, kind, and giving souls you could ever hope to meet. The joy she shared spread a light that touched everyone she met. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will be carried on by all if we "Remember who you are!" Janie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jim Scruggs and doting parents, Dorothy and Ken Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Scruggs; her son, Ken Scruggs; her son-in-love, Joshua Garrett, great-grandchildren, Christopher Dowling and Caitlyn Moton, and several great-grandchildren. Her Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Noon at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, LA. A visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Holly Grove Cemetery in Anacoco, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Jay Lyons. Mama loved flowers, however the family suggests memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, The St. Labre Indian School, 112 St. Labre Campus Drive, Ashland, MT 59003 or to The Wounded Warrior Project, 2200 Space Park Dr Suite 100, Houston, TX 77058. The family wishes to express that if you are unable to attend the service, they understand, and so does Mama and thank you for all the love you are all sending our way. We feel it and cherish it.
