Dorothy was born to Clarence Henry and Wanda Guse Lucas on April 24, 1921 in Vidalia, Louisiana. She passed away at the age of 99 in Bossier City, Louisiana on February 17, 2021.
Dorothy, also lovingly known as "Bubba" by family, was a surgical nurse in training when she met Dr. E. B. Flake, the one she would share a life with for over 59 years. After marrying, they had two sons, E.B., Jr. "Bernie" and Larry. During her time as a surgical nurse at North Louisiana Sanitarium, later known as Doctors Hospital, she was a member of Louisiana General Practice Women's Auxiliary, Louisiana State Medical Society Auxiliary, and a past president of Louisiana State Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood.
The Flake family of four was a tight knit family that loved to travel together in their StarCraft travel trailer. Dorothy enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was camping in The Narrows at Laurel Creek in Arkansas, fishing, and skiing while at their cabin in Plum Orchard at Lake Bistineau or watching for animals that were native to the area they were traveling through. Traveling was a big part of Dorothy's life, adventuring anywhere from Egypt to her favorite place in Colorado (Estes Park), or anywhere the travel trailer would take her. She always knew how to create fun for the family.
Dorothy and her husband eventually traded in their StarCraft for an Airstream and the two joined the International Airstream Club to continue their travels. One destination would always be at an LSU Football game, as she was a big-time fan.
Dorothy was a living example of how a woman could be soft-spoken, classy, and have an air of regality about her, but also be spunky, adventurous, and not afraid to get her hands dirty. Her family was the most important thing to her, and she wanted to participate in everything they were doing. She had a way of making each person feel as though they were her favorite. She would want to know each detail about a hunting trip because her son's excitement was her excitement. The highlight of her day was a daily three o' clock coffee date with her daughter-in-law and granddaughters.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her beloved travel partner and husband, Dr. E. B. Flake, Sr.; parents; and sisters, Laura Elizabeth Lucas and Madeline Romane Lucas Hall. She is survived by sons, E.B. "Bernie" Flake, Jr., Dr. Larry Flake and wife, Teresa, and grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Flake, Kristen Lee Flake, and Jordyn Flake Josey and her husband, Caleb.
Honoring Dorothy as pallbearers will be Dr. Paul Price, Lee Holtzclaw, Mike Roberts, Richard Townley, Don Rucker, Dr. Greg Bryan, and Ron Gibson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Fred Price and Travis Holtzclaw.
