Doris Ruth Dunn Edwards, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Tyler, Texas. Born on April 30, 1937, in Gifford, Kentucky, Doris lived a life of unwavering love for her family. Growing up during the Great Depression in the hills of Kentucky, Doris was one of many children in a large family.
Life was often challenging, but these early hardships instilled in her a deep appreciation for simplicity and the enduring value of faith and family principles that guided her throughout her life.
Doris graduated from Henryville High School in Henryville, Indiana, in 1955. During her school years, she was an enthusiastic participant in basketball and cheerleading as a proud Henryville Hornet.
Doris married Robert C. Edwards (Bob) on Christmas Eve, 1961, and the couple resided in Bossier City, Louisiana. In 1964, Doris and her family began attending Shady Grove Baptist Church in Bossier City, Louisiana. Though she had accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized as a child in the Methodist church, Shady Grove became her spiritual home for many decades. Her faith remained a cornerstone of her life, providing strength through both joyful and difficult times.
Doris was a devoted wife to Robert C. “Bob” Edwards and a loving mother to their two children. She dedicated much of her adult life to caring for their son, Robert C. “Bobby” Edwards Jr., who lived with Muscular Dystrophy. Her commitment extended beyond their home; during the 1970s, she was actively involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association when Bobby served as a Goodwill Ambassador. Her caregiving continued until the age of 80, a testament to her strength and boundless love.
Family was at the heart of everything Doris did. She is survived by her daughter, Robin Edwards Beck, and husband, Mark Beck of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Shawna Bates, Shannon Bates, and Taylor Guyton; great-granddaughter, Ruth Ann Brown; sisters, Marsha McKinney, Barbara Dunn, and Bernice Bounds; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were very important to her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob; son, Bobby; grandson, Benjamin “BJ” Sparks; parents, William L. and Beulah Dunn; sisters, Joy Dunn, Dolores Dunn, Gay Rhoda, and Janet Dunn; and brothers, Eddie Dunn, David Dunn, and Bill Dunn.
Doris found joy in reading and treasured every moment spent with her loved ones. She especially cherished time at church when she could attend. Her days were filled with quiet strength and enduring grace, qualities that left an indelible mark on those around her.
Though the silence left by her absence is profound, the memories of Doris’s life will continue to bring comfort to those who knew her. Her family finds peace knowing that she is now in the presence of Jesus Christ, a truth that brings solace even amidst sorrow.
Doris Ruth Edwards will be remembered for her steadfast faith, selfless devotion to family, and the gentle strength with which she faced life’s challenges. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved her.
