MANSFIELD, LA--A memorial service honoring the life of Don Foster Jones will be celebrated at True Vine Nursery, 807 Highway 522, Mansfield, Louisiana on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. Officiating will be Dr. Thumper Miller and Rev. Donnie Vercher. Visitation will be Friday, September 7, 2018 from 5-8 p.m. at Rose Neath Funeral Home, Mansfield, Louisiana.
Don was born October 31, 1943 in Mansfield, Louisiana and passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, September 1, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He grew up on the family farm and spent his teenage years selling produce and peaches by the side of the road. After graduating from Mansfield High School in 1963 he attended Northwestern State University but left college to take over his family's farming operation when his father passed away in 1967. He was a lifelong resident of Desoto Parish and served in the National Guard.
Don was a hard working dairy farmer for many years in Desoto Parish. He and his wife Jo Anne worked together on the dairy farm and were a great team. He was a past president of the Desoto Parish Farm Bureau and served on the Board of the Louisiana Farm Bureau. Later in life he and his son Huel owned and operated True Vine Nursery, which continues in business today. He grew up in Antioch Baptist Church and was a member of First Baptist Church, Mansfield at the time of his death, where he served as a deacon.
Don is preceded in death by his parents T. Huel and Leah Jones; his brother David Jones; his nephew Chris Hunter; and a whole lot of loving dogs, most of whom were named Ruff or Jack. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Jo Anne Wortham Jones; his son Huel Jones and wife Christie of Mansfield, Louisiana; his sisters Martha Hunter and husband Dean of Marietta, Georgia and Mary Dark and husband Tom of Shreveport, Louisiana; his grandson Christopher Jones. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all those who helped Don during his last years, especially his caregivers LaSharra Johnson, Sherry Ashton and Michael Simpson. Don never met a stranger and had many wonderful friends who loved and cared for him.
Honoring the life of Don as pallbearers will be Jordan Jones, Robert Alexandra, Robert Davidson, Jack Baron, Chris Jones, Steve Jones, John Wortham and Bubba English. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Leon McQueen, Dax Decell, Richie Burford, Wendall Waxham, Chuck Griffin and Curtis Prudhome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gideons International.
