Devona G. Cummings

Devoted mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt, and friend. Devona Jan Gibson Fowler Cummings was born on September 4, 1952, in Mena, Arkansas, and passed peacefully on March 21, 2020. She spent her childhood in Bossier City, Louisiana, where she called home most of her life. Devona loved reading, eating, traveling, and making friends-oh, she loved making friends! She married Frank Fowler at the young age of 19 and began a family with the birth of her daughter, Jan Elizabeth, at the age of 29. Elated at praising Jesus at any moment of the day. Devona loved practicing her faith. She adored the time spent with her friends reading the Bible. She would praise Jesus and God's grace at any moment of the day. She would remind us that God had a plan, and we must follow it blindly, faithfully, and joyfully. Always with a smile. Vigorous defender of children throughout her career. Devona was a graduate of Louisiana University at Monroe. She worked for the State of Louisiana Child Protective Services for over thirty years. She worked on hundreds of cases, always putting the welfare of a child above everything. For Devona, "Jesus loves the little children; all the children of the world" (a song that she would regularly sing to her grandson). Optimistic despite her struggles. "I know people who survive and thrive despite bad things," Devona would say. Her optimism was a miracle on earth. Despite her physical condition, Devona would always be the brightest smile in the room. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and trying new foods and sweets. Devona loved life and appreciated all that life had to give to her. Nonna for her grandson Jacob. Almost four years ago, Devona welcomed her grandson Jacob into the family. She got to hold and sing to him and watch him take his first steps. She enjoyed calling him on the phone and talking to him through video calls. Jacob has inherited her beautiful blue eyes and her sweet tooth. An angel for the rest of us. Devona is survived by her adoring daughter, Jan Elizabeth Fowler Antonaros; her son-in-law, Christos Antonaros; her grandson, Jacob Franklin Antonaros (the little guy who inherited her piercing blue eyes); her sister, Karla Hayes and brother-in-law, Greg Hayes; her brother, Roger Gibson, and sister-in-law, Becky Gibson; Frank Fowler and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts who will all miss her unconditional love and support. She was preceded in death by Ruth Jean Gibson, her mother, and Roger M. Gibson, Sr., her father. Because Devona valued her time practicing her faith, loving her family, and friends above everything, to honor her, please spend time with your family or call a friend you haven't talked to in a while. We will host a beautiful memorial service in Devona's honor in the future when it is safe for a large crowd to gather, and it will be a joyous celebration of Devona's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Devona's honor to the Muscular Dystrophy Association National Office, 161 N. Clark, Suite 3550, Chicago, Illinois 60601 or National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Children, 100 W Harrison St, North Tower, Ste 500, Seattle, WA 98119. https://www.mda.org/make-a-donation https://nationalcasagal.org/
