Dana Jane Barnes

Services for Dana Jane Boone Barnes will be held Monday, August 31, 2026, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr. in Shreveport, LA. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ramonalynn Bethley.

Dana was born in Winnfield, LA on May 17, 1940, and passed away in Shreveport on August 26, 2026. She was proud of her hometown in Winn Parish where her father was a bookkeeper at the courthouse and her mother ran the bookmobile. They were a family of collectors from bottles to fishing lures to recipes. Her Mom cooked many things well including a mean hot water cornbread.

Dana was also a proud Winnfield High School Tiger. She made many friends there and was especially close to her majorette squad who marched and twirled batons in a variety of events including the Natchitoches Christmas Parade. Dana’s baton and gold sequin majorette uniform are still in the family’s possession as she, too, was a keeper and collector.

She moved from Winnfield to Ruston where she attended Louisiana Tech for a time before moving to the big city of Shreveport in 1960. There she took a clerical job with Texas Eastern Pipeline Company in downtown Shreveport. Shortly after beginning work there, she met a handsome fella from Mississippi with a big personality named C.D. (as in C only, D only). His story was that Dana tripped him in the hall one day and soon after began their courtship.

They married in Amory, Mississippi in 1962 and moved to multiple hotspots thereafter as C.D. worked his way up the chain at Texas Eastern. They lived for a time in both Houma, LA and Nashville, TN before moving to Shreveport where they raised their family and enjoyed a wide group of friends. There was never a lack for fun as their home became a frequent gathering spot where good food and laughter were served. Dana became a tireless homemaker and mother to Cliff and Tracy. She was their school Room Mom at both A.C. Steere and Riverside Elementary as well as Girl Scout Cookie Mom, day camp leader and all around driver of the kids to all their sports practices and games. Most nights she had a home cooked meal on the table featuring everything from fried chicken to biscuit beef roll to red beans and rice.

Like her parents, she much enjoyed reading (look for her five star rating system in the front cover of any book she read) and traveling. As a young girl, she delighted in travels she took with a favorite Aunt Inez to far flung places like NYC and Chattanooga, TN. In her adult life, she enjoyed travels with C.D. and friends to places such as Thailand, Australia, Greece, Mexico, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.

Dana loved entertaining friends and taking charge of the household. No task was unimportant and required extensive planning to execute to her standards.

When C.D. retired, they both became more active members at St. Luke's United Methodist Church where they attended services, Bible classes and also volunteered with the yearly Pumpkin Patch and more.

After the death of her husband in 2008, Dana enjoyed time with girlfriends and would often rate the restaurants they frequented for lunch. She loved to laugh and found humor in many things. Comfort was found in the company of her small black pug mix named Suzy.

As years went by, she was affected by the cruelest of diseases in vascular dementia. While memories faded, her sweet smile did not. She remained a kind friend to many and found a welcoming home at Brookdale Assisted Living in Shreveport.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, C.D. Barnes; her parents, Lionel Arville Boone, Sr. and Edrie Bumgardner Boone; brothers Lionel A. Boone, Jr. and Kerry Stroud Boone.

Dana is survived by son, Cliff and his wife, JoAnn of Shreveport and her daughter, Tracy and her husband, Don Speer of Louisville, KY.

Honoring Dana as pallbearers will be David Boone, Lance LaRocca, Mark Duncan and Jerry Acree.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 6012 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA 71105, or The Oakwood Home for Women, 1700 Highland Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71101.

The family would like to extend gratitude to caregivers at Brookdale-Shreveport, Encompass Rehab Hospital-Shreveport and The Carpenter House.
