SUMMERFIELD, LA: Audie Ray Edwards, 78, passed away at his home in Summerfield, Louisiana on February 12, 2020, following a 16 year fight with cancer. The cancer may have won the fight but he was victorious in the battle as he has won the crown of life awaiting him at the end of the life. He said at every phase of the journey that his was a "win-win" situation. If he lived he won and, if he didn't, he won because he knew that he would have the gift of eternal life.
Audie was born April 27, 1941 to Clyde Reese and Jewel Hearn Edwards at their home near Chatham, Louisiana. He had a life filled with a wide variety of experiences. Many friends have heard him repeat what he told a coworker once...that he had been to a World's Fair, been in a tornado, been in a train wreck, and knew the "heartbreak of psoriasis." After graduating from Grayson High School, he joined the Army and served as a radio/teletype intercept operator in the Army Security Agency from 1959-1962. For two of those years, he was stationed at Menwith Hill 13th USASA Field Station at Harrogate, England. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Northeast Louisiana University (now ULM) and later transferred to Louisiana State University where he earned a BS in Marketing in 1969. He then earned a MBA in 1972 from Northeast Louisiana University. He was a member of Pi Sigma Epsilon professional fraternity and helped organize a chapter at LSU while there. He taught Business Law classes at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for two years. He was self-employed for several years before entering law enforcement as a Parole Officer for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections in the Monroe District and Minden District. He also served as the Business Administrator for Wade Correctional Center for four years. He was an auxilliary Police Officer for the Homer Police Department form several years. He retired from the Corrections Department of 2000. Audie became the administrator for the District Attorney's Office for the Second Judicial District retiring from there in 2014. He was a member of the Summerfield United Methodist Church, the Gideon's International, and the Menwith Hill Association.
Audie is preceded in death by his daughter, Lara Edwards Waddle; his parents; his brother, Clyde Morris Edwards and his wife, Lou Edwards, and their child, Ronald Edwards.
He is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Ann Taylor Edwards; a son-in-law, Robert Doyle Waddle, Jr.; a daughter, Dejuanna Edwards Albritton (husband Ken) and a son, Randy Edwards (wife Sandy) who were his children adopted in love. His six granddaughters who he cherished dearly are Emily Waddle Bennett, Brandi Albritton Gilmore, Brittney Albritton Whitlock, Holly Edwards Crutchfield, Jennifer Ellis, and Jessica Smith. He is survived by his sister, Audrie Rodrigue (husband Bobby), nieces, nephews, his church family and many friends.
Visitation was at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, February 14, 2020. Services were held at Rose-Neath Chapel in Homer, Louisiana on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating were Rev. Carrol Holmes and Dr. Johnie Adkins.
Honoring Audie as pallbearers were Matthew Bennett, Kyle Gilmore, Steven Whitlock, Brian Ellis, Michael Allen, and Ben Bleich.
Honorary pallbearers were Ken Copeland, Sherwood Campbell, Jim Hatch, and Randy Pugh.
His family is forever grateful to Dr. Samuel Abshire and his staff; Audie's nurse, Ashley Hollenshead, and all the dedicated staff at Regional Hospice; and Lottie Singleton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Gideon's International, Summerfield Cemetery, or Summerfield United Methodist Church.
