On December 29, 2023, Alma Gail Gibbs, 81, of Springhill, Louisiana lost her life unexpectedly. Gail was born in Leesville, Louisiana on July 28, 1942, to Ward Elmo and Claudia Maria Bryant.
She spent her formative years in Leesville and Shreveport. While attending McNeese College, she met her late husband, CMSGT Robert Glenn Gibbs, who was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. They were married in August 1961, and she devoted her time to being a wife, mother, and homemaker. She spent the next 26 years guiding her family through numerous permanent changes of station before finally planting roots in Springhill, Louisiana in 1987.
Gail enjoyed people and took pride in serving others, whether it was working at the cosmetics counter, serving as a home healthcare nurse, or most recently working the voting sites in local elections. She was a colorful personality and storyteller, so it was serendipitous when she found herself cast as an extra in several movies. She was tickled pink to share her Hollywood experiences and observations with others.
Gail or Mamaw, as she was known by her grandchildren, was a jack of all trades and was never too afraid to try something new. She was brave!
Gail maintained an active lifestyle hosting family and friends, maintaining her yard, and traveling. She believed hard work was the secret to happiness and youthfulness. She loved decorating for holidays, especially Christmas. However, more than anything else, Mamaw treasured her grandchildren.
Gail is survived by her children, Claudia Courtright and husband, Chris, Bobbie Zimkowski and husband, David, Cassandra Ternay, and husband, John, and Col. Christopher Gibbs and wife, Kate; grandchildren, Kimberly Courtright, Phillip Courtright, Stephanie Burns and husband, Ryan, Parker Zimkowski, Presley Zimkowski, Zachary Ternay, Julian Gibbs, Adelaide Gibbs, Gabriel Gibbs, and Cordelia Gibbs. She is also survived by her sisters Beverly White and husband David, Rhonda Parks and husband, Clarence, and brother Ward Elmo Bryant Jr. as well as beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Known as a spontaneous maverick with a zest for life, Gail will be remembered for her bold spirit not the sadness of her passing.
